Abstract


This research discusses how competence and work environment influence employee performance. This case research was conducted on employees of the Semarang City Trade Department and used work motivation as an intervening variable.
This research uses quantitative techniques using multiple regression analysis. In addition, this research took samples from 77 people using purposive sampling technique. The results of the research show that the competence of Semarang City Trade Department employees influences their motivation significantly and positively, and the
work environment also influences their motivation significantly and positively. Apart from that, competency influences the performance of employees of the Semarang City trade department. With the motivation provided by the Semarang City trade department as a
whole, the performance of the Semarang City trade department employees will be better. Suggestions in research are that employees should continue to improve their employees' abilities to improve their performance, and management should pay more attention to a good work environment so that employees are more motivated to work, for
work motivation they should be able to pay more attention to employee responsibilities in order to improve employee performance, because with motivation when responsibility can also improve employee performance, apart from that employees must always be given enthusiastic support in completing tasks according to company targets so that work runs smoothly.
