KARAKTER VISUAL KAWASAN PECINAN SEMARANG

Abstract

The visual character of kelenteng areas in Semarang Chinatown is studied for two purposes: to find the components that form and influence visual character of kelenteng areas in Semarang Chinatown and to find visual link between some visua characters of kelenteng areas in Semarang Chinatown. To study the visual character of area must examined the components of architecture physical character that consist of: Buildings Characters that include buildings fasade, buildings scale, buildings style, materials, texture, and colour; Areas Characters that include: landmark, path, nodes, and edges; and the integration of the both buildings characters and areas characters that include: view and vista. And then to study the visual character of area also must examined about non-physical character that form the background of physical formation. According to the result and the analysis, the writer found that the visual character of kelenteng areas in Semarang Chinatown develops from the physical character as the main components and the non-physical character as the supporting components. This was done by observing the history of the Chinatown area in Semarang. A character in kelenteng area sequence which constant relatively and is not changed too much. The constant character that survive is original character which become area identity. From such a thing, the kelenteng area of Semarang Chinatown has visual character which constant relatively and the existence need to be maintained, therefore it is necessary to find its visual character type so can be used in consideration of the components that need to be maintained and the components that must be developed in the revitalization of Chinatown area in Semarang.
